TORONTO — In an on-paper mismatch that pitted ace Max Fried in opposition to rookie Trey Yesavage, the Yankees All-Star regarded just like the much more underwhelming arm.
Fried exited within the fourth inning — recording only one extra out than Luis Gil had an evening earlier — and was charged with seven runs on eight hits and two walks in a startling Sport 2 dud at Rogers Centre on Sunday.
Two of these runs scored after Fried exited. He handed a two-on, none-out jam to Will Warren within the fourth.
In his postseason debut, Warren loaded the bases with a stroll and later surrendered a grand slam to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that put the Yankees in a surprising, 9-0 gap.

In a close to must-win, trailing 1-0 in a best-of-five, Fried couldn’t ship. He allowed two runs within the second, when Daulton Varsho doubled (and reached third on an Aaron Choose error) earlier than Ernie Clement sat on a first-pitch curveball that he blasted to left for a two-run edge.
The Jays added on the third, when a stroll and three singles — together with loads of laborious contact, akin to one other Varsho double and a rocket single into left from Clement — scored three extra.
In the meantime, Yesavage — a 22-year-old with 14 profession main league innings — had not allowed a success by 5 innings.
